Geoff feels very strongly that art is an essential element in the development of society. In sparking our sense of wonder, the vanguard of all human progress.
'Art, true art presents something new to us. It raises questions and fuels our curiosity, ultimately, we must find our own answers to the questions it asks, art draws out the answers from within us.'
Geoff is constantly questing to create the new, the unseen through his sculptures. He mates an eclectic group of tools, techniques and media, ever aiming to create something unexpected.
The vast majority his materials are gathered from the North Yorkshire countryside surrounding his studio. Wind fallen trees, field stones dropped by glaciers eons ago, old iron, tools and machinery long since abandoned and forgotten. He feels that the resources he gathers already have a history and a unique character.
His sculpting process is a meditative one. He works without a plan, striving to allow the sculpture to create itself. This tends to give way to a concentrated 'finishing' stage, tidying up the piece until he feels satisfied that he can do no more to improve it.
Ultimately, Geoff sees his creations as 'entities' existing not as images or representations, but as plants and creatures holding their own presence.
'I will only feel truly satisfied when, as I finish a sculpture, it starts to breathe!'
